Laser hair removal can change your life.
Trust me on this one. In this post I want to share the how and why I decided to do it, and let you know what I think about all of it. Since these things are personal, I hope you will be able to get enough information here to make an informed decision and figure out if it is right for you as well – or if you want to keep that soft, furry goodness.
My journey started around the same time as most women – puberty hit and we realized that it wasn’t all that cute to have fuzzy legs. Yes, I think at that age most of the hair on my legs were blonde, but it still glistened in the sun like a fine set of diamonds at the right angle. We all started shaving around the time we figured out we actually cared what men thought of us, and wanted to look cute. (RIP 6th grade Heather – if you really thought shaving some fuzz off your legs would help the amount of awkward you had in store for the next few years, you were up in the night).
The true problem started a few years after that. I had mastered the shave so at least I didn’t cut myself all the time. What I did end up with – no matter what I did – is get tons of ingrown hairs. Those things are flipping painful, no joke.
Finally, I had enough.
I made an appointment to see my dermatologist because one of the ingrown hairs was causing swelling and major infection on my lower leg. He prescribed a cream to get rid of that spot, but then brought up laser hair removal.
I hadn’t ever considered it before for anything but lazy people. It is some massive convenience that only benefits the women who are super high-maintenance or super lazy and don’t want to deal with it. He suggested that I get the treatments so that I wouldn’t get these awful ingrown, infected hair spots anymore. I was at the point where I would do anything – the pressure from the swelling was causing pitted edema, hurt like heck, and looked hideous.
My dermatologist offered me an awesome deal since it is pretty expensive, so I ultimately got a buy one get one area free deal. Because of that, I decided to have both my lower legs and my bikini line done, and I can promise you:
IT IS SO WORTH IT.
I know…you may be wondering why someone who is working on a more minimalist lifestyle would ever consider laser hair removal. My theory is this – yes, there is a higher upfront cost for the treatments. I had to do 6 treatments, and I could probably go back a time or two more to do a touch up appointment.
BUT it has ultimately saved me a ton of time, money, pain, and embarrassment overall. That is priceless to me. I no longer have to panic when my friends want to go swimming because I haven’t shaved in months. I don’t have to buy packs of razors and shaving gel all the time to get that close shave I want. Best of all? Now I never have to shave daily to hide my hairy legs. I am so free! That is why I felt like it fit my overall goal for a more minimalist lifestyle. I would rather pay a little extra upfront so that I can live a simple life going forward.
Laser hair for the win!
