If this wasn’t the most hilarious story to me, I might be a little bit embarrassed to share it. But here I sit laughing at how absurd I really am, so my concerns are going to take backseat. No shotgun for you, embarrassment!
Recently, my mom was at Costco and grabbed me a pack of socks. KB brand of course. They are soft, high quality, and not too thick. She threw them in with my birthday presents because who doesn’t love unwrapping one extra gift? Even when you know it is just those new socks you needed. So anyways, I had this pack of new socks sitting in a pile with my other gifts.
After a day filled with love and so much spoiling for my birthday, I was pretty tired. So I got all ready for bed, took a sleeping pill, and snuggled deep into my covers. I intended to go to sleep. So that is what I did.
The End.
Just kidding. If only that was the end….
Apparently, despite the fact that I was now fully invested in this sleeping pill (it had clearly kicked in and taken affect), my night did not end with sugar plums dancing in my head. Although I may have been dancing…who even knows.
The next morning, my mom came in and asked what the heck I was doing the night before. “What are you talking about?”
She then proceeded to tell me that she had gotten up in the middle of the night and had seen my bedroom light on in my room down the hall. After coming into the room, she discovered me…organizing my new socks. She tried to talk to me and ask what I was doing. The weird noises probably akin to how the zombies sound on Walking Dead were not much help in explaining myself, so she somehow got me to sleep and took the socks away.
I am not sure if my intentions were to separate them for laundry so they were all in their light and dark groups or what my organizing scheme was. I am also not sure if I was very good at making my socks “organized” since I had no idea I was doing it and also don’t remember it even happening. (Yikes! At least I didn’t try driving my car somewhere. Although this reminds me of that time I found the spoon next to the peanut butter jar….another story for another day 🙂 haha I will have to be harnessed to my bed if I ever start dieting!)
So what can we learn from the parable of the socks?
I know what you are thinking… Clearly the lesson is that we shouldn’t take sleeping pills. Those things make you act like a freaking crazy person!!!
But nope. If that was your first guess, I would have to gingerly apologize and let you know that you stink at finding brilliant underlying messages in random situations.
And then I would offer you the following as food for thought….or warmth for your toes:
Sometimes (especially when we are awake and know what is happening in life), events occur that don’t make sense. It is frustrating because we can’t seem to solve every problem that arises. Life is hard! It is challenging! Things don’t seem to line up, or pair up, or even match. Sometimes we can’t even find the proverbial “other sock” that is the answer to these problems.
So what do we do when this happens? Do you toss that lonely problem into the trash and walk away? Or do you instead choose to check in the laundry basket, make sure it wasn’t dropped behind the washer, or see if there is another sock that recently lost its buddy?
Catch my drift?
Yes, this is in fact a story about me sorting my socks while completely asleep. I should probably get an award for this kind of thing. But if you look a little deeper, you might find a few parallels with life. Not to mention fashion (another of my loves that is going to be included in this blog in the next few days). If you don’t sort your socks out (or organize the crap going on in your day-to-day activities) you might end up with a colored sock in a load of white laundry. Or even worse, you might end up with a sad journey through mortality.
Today, I am using my random ridiculous example to issue your very first challenge. Get your life organized.
5 ways to get organized today:
- Make a list
- Clean out the junk that is cluttering your days with unnecessary stress
- Set some goals or choose a word
- Make small changes
- Don’t get discouraged
Take care of things so that when you go to sleep each night, you can relax knowing that you did your best for THAT day, and that even if you messed up a little, you can try again in the morning.
Opportunities to change and make our situations better come up ALL THE TIME! Do you sit on the couch binge-watching that next hit season on Netflix, or are you doing the small, seemingly insignificant things that can help you reach your ultimate goals? Get your “socks” sorted and create a life what you want. All you gotta do is START. Time to get organized and start making those changes, instigating movement, and building the life of your flipping dreams.
That was deep. Haha sort of…you’re welcome!
XO – Heather
