Frances Mayes has done it again. As many of you know, I am in love with Italy. The sounds, tastes, smells, every little cracked facade and the beautiful language and people. I wanted to pick up another book to take me back since COVID-19 has put a huge damper on travel plans across the board. I was craving to feel at home again. And that is Italy for me.
If you are familiar with Mayes, she uses Italy in a lot of her novels. One of the most famous being Eat, Pray, Love which was converted for the big screen with the brilliant Julia Roberts.
So back to Women in Sunshine – is there truly anything more magical than Italy and a gorgeous sunny day? No. That was a trick question because there is only one answer ;). Mayes takes us on a journey through the lives of women going through a lot of change. Loss of spouses, aging, loneliness, fear, courage. All things that are so relevant to readers across the world. What brings them together? A connection of friendship and ultimately, they choose to move to Italy instead of moving to the retirement community that connected them at the start.
